We come to you!
Welcome to Sharpen Live
We want Dental, Medical, Surgical, and Veterinary offices to reimagine the way their instruments are sharpened and maintained all the way from New to Next. It's more than just a cliché to say that we are only as good as our instruments. It's reality! In my 30-year career as a hygienist we have gone from dark rooms to digital, from charts to paperless, from red and blue pencils to voice recognition charting, from impressions to scanning and it never ends. It's time to take instrument sharpening out of the Stone Age.
Who has hours to spend with a stone when there are so many more productive tasks to be done? Scale time is precious so why spend double the time and effort with blunted instruments and risk injury. Negative reviews can be detrimental if we are perceived as rough, not thorough or taking too long on an appointment. The cost of dull instruments is paid by the office, hygienist and patients.
Sharpen Live is 100% hygienist owned and operated. Our goal for dentistry and medicine is NO more wondering where to send your instruments, paying for shipping, wondering when they will be back or what to use while they're gone. We imagine Dental and Surgical instrument maintenance as simple, convenient, and affordable as possible.

FAQs
How does in-office instrument Sharpening work?
It’s a completely hassle-free visit. When we arrive, we only need a place to set up that’s out of the way with a small countertop and a place to plug in. Bring us all the instruments that need to be sharpened except what you’re immediately using. We use a portable Enbio S class B autoclave to sterilize the dirty instruments. Next, we sharpen, repackage, stamp and sterilize again for immediate use. At no time will the hygienist be without instruments. The average visit takes approximately 2 hours.
What’s an Enbio?
It’s the world’s fastest vacuum/class B autoclave that can sterilize dirty instruments in approximately 7 minutes total time from closing the door until it opens. That includes heating up and depressurization. If they need to be completely dry for use, total time is approximately 15 minutes.
How often should we get our instruments sharpened?
Every 12 weeks or less is recommended. As instruments become dull they require more pressure on the blade which rounds it more and requires more correction. This actually shortens its life and fatigues the clinician.
How long do new instruments last?
18 months on average depending on use, type of metal, and original thickness of blade. A common mistake that considerably shortens the life of instruments is to use an improper technique that flattens the angle. This often requires too much correction and leaves the blade too thin or short to be safe for use.
Do you only sharpen dental instruments?
No, we are not limited to dental instruments. We sharpen all types of instruments inducing surgical instruments and scissors.
What do you use to sharpen the instruments?
We use commercial equipment with many different attachments and types of materials that are specifically made for dental instruments, scissors, and surgical instruments. This helps to maintain the original shape and integrity of instruments with speed and accuracy.
What is the service area and trip fees?
No fee to service DFW and immediate surrounding areas. $25 for offices up to 80 miles. Mail in with next day return offered for offices over 80 miles away. Please check blackout dates.
Do you offer Instrument Sharpening by mail?
Yes we do! If you aren't in the DFW Metroplex area or you don't have enough instruments to meet the minimum $200 order, you can simply Print This Form , fill in the blanks and drop the form in the box before you mail them to us.
